Subject: Early 90"s CNC bridgeport conversion

Hello,

I need a bit of guidance. I am converting my old Anilam 3 axis CNC Bridgeport over to a modern control system. I have Mach3, Viper drives for the DC servo motors. I bought the KFlop after some research revealed that Mach would not work well with the existing glass scale when I would use the mill in manual mode.

 My questions are;

1) Do I need a break out board and what is recommended? I have a CNC4PC C11 and a C11T.

2) Can I place the KFlop and B Board in the same enclosure as the power supply and servo drives?

  The original Anilam enclosure that held the power supply and cards would be my first choice for an enclosure. I would like to keep the original PS and reuse the cables and connectors to the servo motors. I plan on routing a separate isolated and grounded cable from the motors to the viper drives. The enclosure has separate cable and connectors for the glass scales which i would rout to the Kflop.

Hi,

Regarding:

#1 I believe the Viper can accept 5V TTL step/dir input levels which are the same as 3.3V LVTTL input levels (2.8V high level) so you should be able to make direct connections from FLOP to the Viper.  But you should look at your Viper Manual to make sure.  The breakout boards you have may provide some other benefits for buffering signals and filtering inputs.   KFLOP does not have a parallel port connector pinout so you would need to make a custom cable if you want to connect to a breakout board that expects a parallel port pinout.

#2 you should be able to put KFLOP in the same enclosure with your drives.  Use careful/standard wiring/grounding techniques to minimize noise as much as possible.
